Jakarta, Indonesia - Dozens of people are gathered in front of Jakarta’s Town Hall to start a long march against Global Climate Strike. This action was initiated by Climate Coalition which consists of XR Indonesia, Enter Nusantara, Koprol Iklim, Fridays For Future Indonesia, Kpop4planet, and many more. Those groups have the same demand: "Real Transition, No More Fake Promises”. As you probably know before that Indonesia is the largest nickel exporter in the world where we have 25% of the total nickel resources.
It seems a good thing, considering that nickel is the primary battery source, and the battery has been chosen as the future of world energy, particularly in energizing the car and vehicles worldwide. Yet, nickel mining in Indonesia has brought such a crucial impact, particularly on the surrounding environment. The most extensive nickel mining is located in Sulawesi and there are more than 5 big industries that run nickel mining there. It’s really affected the settlers there. The concern is most of the settlers there are fishermen and this is what caused ecological disaster was happening there.
The waste from the mining process was just thrown away into the sea without being filtered first. And this is what caused thousands of fishermen are fighting the company to close the mining operation because they didn’t being responsible for the waste they made and there is no compensation/solution offered by the company to the settlers there. Besides, in Jakarta itself, we demand “Fresh Air” because too much pollution is aired in the air. We demand climate justice, social justice, and no more fake promises that the government has made.
Jakarta Also is one of the most rapidly sinking cities in the world where the sea level is always rising rapidly every single year. And it caused more flooding in Jakarta wider and made about 3% of Jakarta's Land underwater Hundred Thousands of Settlers Live Along The Coastal Area in North Jakarta has to move their house back or build up the 2nd Floor to evacuate in case of the Sea level rise.
We demand to accelerate Green Transition because we have no more time to wait until we sink and extinct. As Indonesia this year holds the presidency of the ASEAN Summit which will be held in Jakarta, we hope that government could take further action against the climate crisis and put up this crisis to be the most important matter on the ASEAN Summit Agenda.
