Indonesia and plastic are two things that can’t be separated. Moreover, we could see that Indonesia is the 2nd biggest waste polluter in the world, just right behind China. We produce millions of tons of waste a year and most of the waste in Indonesia is ended up in the ocean which gives more pollutants to the ocean and it increases the vulnerability to disease caused by microplastic.
According to the data released in 2021 by the Ministry of Forestry and Environment of the Republic of Indonesia, there are 11.7 tons of plastic waste, or around 17% of the total waste generated nationally. That’s a number that can’t be denied and it’s a fact that Indonesia still uses a lot of plastic-based material and mostly just for single use. And this is can be caused serious things to the future of this country because we all know that waste is an issue that cannot easily be done.
Therefore, Fridays For Future Indonesia has concerned about lifting up this issue and hopefully will raise people's attention, especially from the group who lack knowledge about how dangerous and serious this waste problem is. We have invited 2 distinguished speakers from different backgrounds to broadly enrich the perspective of the topic and could gain as much as insight would be. This topic is rather general and could be accepted by anyone. Asserting this topic is a must, due to the condition we face now is that really risky and vulnerable.
Samuel (Seasoldier of North Sulawesi) and Ayu (Getplastic Indonesia) were the panelists' speakers of this webinar series. This is also marked as the webinar series kicked off that in the future it will be a sustained webinar that will rise a topic that really matters to the people, particularly, the Indonesian people. The webinar series that was held on 21 February 2023 has attended by 100++ people across Indonesia from diverse backgrounds. Most of them are college students. High school students and many practitioners in the professional world are eager to enhance their capabilities as an individual.
This webinar series will be sustained and will raise as many topics as possible to gain more audiences to be influenced by positive and insightful information and also hope that will be a bold relationship amongst the participants and that they could run a project/event together from their community back in their respective region.
